I'm a man on a mission

This blog will chronicle my adventures in bringing world class coffee and espresso to Los Angeles.
I'm currently scouting locations and generally getting my self organized.

The state of coffee in L.A. is pretty bad! I could count on one hand the number of coffeeshops in So. California that care at all about the quality, taste and presentation of the coffee that they serve.

Tonight on KNBC news at 5pm there will be a news story on independent coffee shops in L.A. and their fight against the mega-chains... I hope they find someone newsworthy!

This is a call to all the coffee geeks, espresso fanatics, baristas and other freaks out there to make your thoughts heard and a call to anyone else who wants to be a part of the movement to bring Seattle quality to L.A.

TBH, all due respect to Nick Cho aside, I absolutely detest the whole "third wave" concept. It strikes me as a completely pompous and self-congratulating marketing premise propogated by a select few in the industry. Particularly in light of the fact that great espresso (in its bean sources, techniques, and methods) has been generally consistent throughout generations in places like Italy.

In fact, any concept of "waves" is a better descriptor for the changing educated palates of American coffee consumers -- not coffee production or the coffee itself.

For better or for worse, we don't live in Italy.
The Culinary preparation of espresso in America is something that has only existed in small areas so far.

I agree that there could be a better descriptor for this "movement" to improve.

Third Wave is the only one that's stuck so far
